(NIV1984) 1 Kings 22:16 – “The king said to him, ‘How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?'”
Although it is not specific about which king said this, I feel it is safe to assume that Ahab is the one speaking here. And yet, this response seems so odd! How does he know that Micaiah is lying? Why would he make Micaiah swear to tell him the truth? Hasn’t Micaiah already stated that he will only say what the LORD gives him to say? And doesn’t he say that “the LORD will give it into the king’s hand” (NIV1984, 1 Kings 22:15) instead of “the Lord will give it into the king’s hand” (NIV1984, 1 Kings 22:6)? (Although the prophets in 1 Kings 22:12 say the same thing as Micaiah.)
So why does Ahab doubt him? Just because Micaiah normally has bad things to say about him? And doesn’t he want a good prophecy, not a bad one?
I am so confused here.
