(NIV1984) 1 Kings 21:22 – “‘”I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and caused Israel to sin.”‘”
Now – Jeroboam was the first king of Israel. God tore the tribes away from Rehoboam and the house of David and gave all but one to Jeroboam. Yet Jeroboam turned away from the LORD and was punished – his family was completely destroyed by Baasha. Baasha continued to do evil as Jeroboam did, and all the males in his line were wiped out during the hostile takeover during his son’s reign.
This is what God is delivering to Ahab for all the evil – for directing the country of Israel to sin. It would be one thing if he sinned for himself – it’s another thing to cause Israel to sin (partially by being a bad example). At the same time – Ahab is part of a long procession of kings in Israel who did evil in the sight of the LORD – but he is often called out as the worst offender. This is interesting because of all the miracles God did during his reign. He was given ample opportunity to change…so why didn’t he?
