Apologies on being so late again! But here is today’s post!
(NIV1984) 1 Kings 18:25-26 – “Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but go not light the fire.’ So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
“Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘O Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.”
I like how Elijah – and God – are so obviously in charge of this whole thing. The prophets of Baal don’t push through and immediately choose their bull. They wait until Elijah tells them to. Also – they chose the bull…but it was the one given to them?
Elijah lets them go first. Dramatically, this is cool. We get to watch as all 450 prophets of Baal try to succeed and only fail. The people probably got bored with watching them – morning to noon with no response! But they had to stay to see what Elijah and God would do.
Theoretically, because there were so many, Baal should have heard them. It’s generally easier to hear 450 than 1. But oh the stark contrast that will occur!
